Thu 18th Dec 2008 Nuts 2

Matt from North Oxford Garage has already emailed me again and confirmed that the new behaviour of the ambient air temperature display is correct. He tells me every model they have that he’s tried, including their demo F800GS, behaves in exactly the same way with the exception of their K1200S demo which works as mine used to. So, it looks like I’ve got an ‘upgrade’ which I consider to provide a flawed function. Oh well, if that’s all that’s wrong with the bike now, it won’t be the end of the world I guess.

He’s also confirmed that they’ve now fitted the exhaust back correctly and they’ll be bringing the bike back around 12 noon.

What I really don’t understand, but then doesn’t surprise me, is why they didn’t know this when I called yesterday. Surely I can’t be the first person to have noticed a change in the way the display works following a software upgrade? Or, maybe I am lol.

I really hope that’s it now.

Recently, thanks to the various BMW forums I’ve become aware of a recall notice, or more accurately an enhancement notice (number 0033050000) which apparently applies to all later K series bikes. Something to do with the bearings in the rear suspension relay lever. Apparently over time the bearing seize up and then in extreme cases the relay lever snaps and bike drops to the ground having no rear suspension. I haven’t received a formal notification or letter from BMW but I understand it applies the K1200S, GT and R and that BMW have instructed their dealers to change them on all bikes and that they will pick up the bill until the end of February 2009.

Having obtained all this info I asked Matt if it applied to my bike and if so had they done it as a matter of course. I just received his reply to let me know that yes, they have changed the relay lever on my bike.
